You aren't using QWERTY, are you?

I'm actually using Colemak.

That's the layout for people too stupid to use Dvorak.

Do you just reprogram the keyboard on a regular qwerty laptop and memorize the new key positions, or do you buy the laptop with a special keyboard pre-installed?

I use a blank keyboard

I just use setxkbmap. Recently I started using Programmer Dvorak, you should too.
That always seemed like hipster nonsense to me. Get a cheap, good keyboard like the Dell AT101W or the Model M.

It's not hipster nonsense, it's protection against thieves. Kind of like driving with manual transmission.

An alterative layout is more than enough - a thief wouldn't be able to do *anything* unless he knew the layout.

I want to know what kind of run-of-the-mill thief is so interested in any kind of computer keyboard. Expensive brand new keyboards go in the $100 range. Those keyboards selling second hand and working perfectly aren't worth their brand new price.

What about those fancy metal keyboards that only come with Apple computers? They must fetch a pretty price on the dark markets.

A blank keyboard would deter a thief from even going near the keyboard, thus saving it and you from disease.

What disease does the thief have?
