Some of those "surrealist" ones remind me of when I would hack the graphics in Civilization II in my teen years and made the tank into a "cyborg penis" (a giant penis on tank treads).

There is no requirement for Emoji ZWJ Sequences to be approved by Unicode.
Vendors are free to make combinations of emoji using the ZWJ. The only constraint is that they are meaningful as a sequence.

The Amsterdam man decided to do something about the lack of a rainbow flag emoji after one of his friends was run off his bike and called a "cancer homo", the man said to the newspaper. "I wanted to dedicate a tweet to it, with a rainbow flag. But that does not exist. This was not the first time I missed the flag. But this time I decided to do something about it."

Explanation of the "TAG" system that lets you customize emoji

With this TAG mechanism, a given emoji can have a specified list of special “TAG” characters after it that indicate a particular customization: the whole sequence is called an “emoji tag sequence”. The emoji tag sequence looks like a single character to the user, and behaves as a single emoji character in display, line break, and other processing. The TAG mechanism differs from the skin-tone modifiers in being much extensible.

What about a nazi flag emoji? surely that would be what you get when TAG customizing the flag with the swastica.

TrueType systems include a virtual machine that executes programs inside the font, processing the "hints" of the glyphs. These distort the control points which define the outline, with the intention that the rasterizer produce fewer undesirable features on the glyph. Each glyph's hinting program takes account of the size (in pixels) at which the glyph is to be displayed, as well as other less important factors of the display environment.

Although incapable of receiving input and producing output as normally understood in programming, the TrueType hinting language does offer the other prerequisites of programming languages: conditional branching (IF statements), looping an arbitrary number of times (FOR- and WHILE-type statements), variables (although these are simply numbered slots in an area of memory reserved by the font), and encapsulation of code into functions. Special instructions called delta hints are the lowest level control, moving a control point at just one pixel size.

The hallmark of effective TrueType glyph programming techniques is that it does as much as possible using variables defined just once in the whole font (e.g., stem widths, cap height, x-height). This means avoiding delta instructions as much as possible. This helps the font developer to make major changes (e.g., the point at which the entire font's main stems jump from 1 to 2 pixels wide) most of the way through development.

http://emojipedia.org/two-men-holding-hands/

i like how Mozilla were the only ones to make them an interracial couple, how progressive of them

i also like how in both that one + http://emojipedia.org/man-and-woman-holding-hands/ the skin tone modifier affects both people simultaneously, so interracial couples are literally not possible to express with unicode composition

EMOJI AS A VEHICLE FOR CULTURAL MARIXSM: Actor Insists ‘Emoji Movie’ Will Fight Trump, Make Young People ‘Adopt Progressive Values’
68 Name: Anonymous 2017-07-22 00:30
The lead voice actor for The Emoji Movie insisted in an interview Thursday that the movie is a very, very important way of fighting President Donald Trump's administration, rather than just a film about talking faces.

The GNU C Library version 2.26 is now available

* Unicode 10.0.0 Support: Character encoding, character type info, and
transliteration tables are all updated to Unicode 10.0.0, using
generator scripts contributed by Mike FABIAN (Red Hat).
These updates cause user visible changes, especially the changes in
wcwidth for many emoji characters cause problems when emoji sequences
are rendered with pango, see for example:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780669#c5

https://emojipedia.org/unicode-10.0/

There are apparently 8,518 new characters, 56 of which are emoji.

New ones include the Muslim emoji ( Woman With Headscarf and Bearded Person), the British Erotica emoji ( Face With Monocle and Person in Steamy Room) and the Chinese Food emoji ( Dumpling, Fortune Cookie and Takeout Box).

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/352222-maine-senator-please-consider-a-lobster-emoji

https://www.king.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/09-22-17%20Unicode%20Consortium%20re%20Lobster%20Emoji_Policy.pdf

It would be worthwhile for the UTC to add a lobster emoji because no existing emoji accurately captures the species, it would complete a set of emoji representing crustaceans commonly consumed as food items, and it would respond to significant public demand.

Neither the existing crab nor shrimp emoji can effectively used to represent a lobster, which has a distinctively different profile.

Further, a search on Twitter or Instagram for "#NoLobsterEmoji" reveals thousands of examples of likely users of a new character, as does a petition on this issue that over 4000 people have signed. A new lobster emoji would fill a necessary and unique void in the current Emoji List, and, should it be added, appears destined for significant usage by lobster fans around the world.

https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-is-gender-and-why-does-it-matter-to-emoji/
https://archive.is/Wa4tp

What is Gender and Why Does it Matter to Emoji?

One aspect of this added detail was to give explicit gender to many emoji characters that were previously agender or ambiguously gendered in other emoji sets. Apple’s police officer and construction worker became men. Its characters receiving 💇 haircuts and 💆 massages became women

Whether it was intentional or not, users saw an all-too-familiar pattern: emoji persons in active or working roles were depicted as men, and those in passive or frivolous roles were depicted as women.

And although Google defines gender as ‘the state of being male or female’, this definition anachronistic for our time. Today, an increasing number of individuals have rejected binary notions of gender in favor of more expansive models. A better working definition for gender can be found on Wikipedia as ‘the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity’.

Selfie
A camera (usually a mobile phone camera) held up to take a photo of the person holding it. May be represented by an outstretched hand and phone, or a face showing an extended arm and phone in hand.

Selfie was approved as part of Unicode 9.0 in 2016 and added to Emoji 3.0 in 2016.

This character is damaging to both ISO/IEC 10646 and the Unicode Standard. It is bad enough
that the ESC came up with it, but it beggars believe that the UTC actually approved it. Organic
waste isn’t cute. The existing PILE OF POO character was added for compatibility with Japanese
telco sets. It is a pity that Apple followed Softbank rather than KDDI in its reference glyph, since
a coil of dog dirt with stink lines and flies is surely the only proper semantic. The idea that our
5
committees would sanction further cute graphic characters based on this should embarrass
absolutely everyone who votes yes on suc
h an excrescence. Will we have a CRYING PILE OF POO
next? PILE OF POO WITH TONGUE STICKING OUT? PILE OF POO WITH QUESTION MARKS FOR
EYES? PILE OF POO WITH KARAOKE MIC? Will we have to encode a neutral FACELESS PILE OF
POO? As an ordinary user, I don’t want
this kind of crap on my phone. As a representative of the
National Standards Authority of Ireland, I have to wonder what possible good could come of
encoding such a character. Bullying, perhaps?
Requested change: Remove this character from
the PDAM and reject its encoding.

ANDREW WEST:
I'm concerned that this character will open the floodgates for an open
-ended set of PILE OF POO
emoji with emotions, such as CRYING PILE OF POO, PILE OF POO WITH LOOK OF TRIUMPH, PILE
OF POO SCREAMING IN FEAR, etc. Is there really any need to add a range of emotions to PILE OF
POO? I personally think that changing PILE OF POO to a de facto SMILING PILE OF POO was
wrong, but adding F|FROWNING PILE OF POO as a counterpart is even worse. If this is accepted
then there will
be no neutral, expressionless PILE OF POO, so at least a PILE OF POO WITH NO
FACE would be required to be encoded to restore some balance. I recommend removing
FROWNING PILE OF POO pending further study and public consultation on the need for
additional PILE OF POO emoji.

This fall, millions of women around the world will finally have an emoji they can identify with, thanks to this Vienna high school student who proposed Apple’s new emoji with a headscarf. While messaging friends last year, Alhumedhi, who is Muslim and wears a headscarf, was baffled when she searched her phone for an emoji that looked like her but couldn’t find one. “It’s something important to my identity,” she says. So Alhumedhi, who hails from Saudi Arabia, appealed to Apple and then the Unicode Consortium, which controls emoji standards. Her campaign quickly gained steam, earning the support of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and eventually Apple announced the emoji was on its way. Alhumedhi says it’s a step forward in celebrating diversity and accepting the Muslim faith. “I think this emoji will influence the world indirectly,” she says, “once people who are against women wearing the headscarf, or against Islam in general, view such an emoji on their keyboard.” —Melissa Chan

A thing happened the other day. I was texting with a friend who uses emoji with darker-colored skin-tones. Based on her use of emoji with non-white skin-tones, I wasn’t sure if she was a person of color whom I had wrongly been perceiving as white.
So I asked her if she identifies as a person of color, to which she said no. Turns out, as I originally thought, she’s white. That’s when our conversation went from text to a good old-fashioned phone call. This felt like too sensitive of a matter to hash out over text.
As the phone rang, my heart was racing and I felt pretty anxious. Unsure of how she was going to take my discomfort and skepticism, I was fearful this would be the last time we ever spoke. (Yeah, I can be super dramatic sometimes).
When she picked up the phone, I stumbled over my words for a bit before finally asking, “So……why do you use that color emoji?” Just so we’re on the same page, this was the exact emoji in question: https://archive.is/w37kc/894b2e2c4ec1a586e25f7b89cebf5ac0bd85ddeb.png

https://slashdot.org/story/18/02/15/1655206/mac-and-ios-bug-crashes-apps-with-a-single-indian-language-character

The message in question has to contain a single character from the Indian Telugu language (not included here for obvious reasons). When the message is opened on an iPhone running iOS 11.2.5, the iPhone's native Messages app and certain third-party app including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger will crash. In some cases, the iPhone will simply revert to its login screen and require you to enter your PIN again.

And last year a bug was discovered that crashes an iPhone with a message containing a combination of emoji.

The message-of-death consists three visible characters: a white flag, a zero and a rainbow emoji, as well as an invisible character, called variation sector 16 or VS16. When the message is received, the VS16 signals the iPhone's Messages app to combine the two emoji into one, which cannot be done and can cause the app to crash and the phone to freeze.

Since the 2015 introduction of Fitzpatrick scale modifier, which allowed emoji to have skin tones different to the Simpsonesque default, many have assumed further emoji releases would gradually decouple the pictograms from a limited — and in many senses Western, male and heteronormative — vision of humanity.

By these terms, a campaign for a dumpling emoji is refashioned as a triumph of the people's will. A back-end Windows update is a bold stance on interracial relations. And Unicode's latest emoji release, which allows for characters with red hair, can be reported as an "end to the neglect" of gingers.

"Unicode's open to it," Mr Burge says.

"They don't have any stance against any aspect of humanity."

michael,

the reason for this is that you have a single display.

😮.0
😮.1

for both monitors. from x(7)

displaynumber
the phrase "display" is usually used to refer to collection of
monitors that share a common keyboard and pointer (mouse,
tablet, etc.). most workstations tend to only have one key-
board, and therefore, only one display. larger, multi-user
systems, however, frequently have several displays so that more
than one person can be doing graphics work at once. to avoid
confusion, each display on a machine is assigned a display num-
ber (beginning at 0) when the x server for that display is
started. the display number must always be given in a display
name.

but then, it's possible that i may be wrong.

We feel strongly that inter-skintone couple emoji should be included in the Unicode
emoji set.
The lack of representation for diverse racial identities is a significant issue in an
increasingly globalised society. With this problem gaining increased media attention,
and since efforts have already been made to ensure the representation of
non-heteronormative sexual identities, now seems an appropriate cultural moment to
give people the opportunity to see themselves represented in the emoji world.
Moreover, recent years have seen a large spike in the number of interracial couples and
marriages. This ought to be recognised, especially given the current political
environment.

Onion Social Embraces Diversity By Adding Prophet Mohammed Emoji
6/20/18 2:16pmSEE MORE: ONION SOCIAL

PALO ALTO, CA—In an effort to make the platform comfortable and accessible for users of all backgrounds, Onion Social announced Wednesday that as part of its continued commitment to diversity, the company would be adding a range of Prophet Mohammed emojis. “This update will give Muslim users a fun and easy way to share how they’re feeling using an image of their most important religious figure,” said Onion Social CEO Jeremy Rosenbaum, telling reporters that the new set of pictograms would include the founder of Islam in a variety of skin tones, as well as expressions such as smiling, frowning, waving, and vomiting. “We know that many of you have expressed concern over the fact that 99.95 percent of Onion Social’s workforce is Caucasian, and we want to let you know that we’ve heard you, and we’re making changes. We couldn’t be more thrilled that the world’s fastest-growing religion will finally have the representation it deserves on our platform.” Rosenbaum added that if the emojis proved as successful as anticipated, Onion Social planned to roll out a filter for users’ profile pictures that would allow them to appear as the prophet themselves.

However, after the JIS standard was released people noticed something strange - several of the added characters had no obvious sources, and nobody could tell what they meant or how they should be pronounced. Nobody was sure where they came from. These are what came to be known as the ghost characters (幽霊文字).
